How it is worked out

Each instalment is invested at the start of the month and compounds monthly at the annual return divided by 12. Maturity = P × [((1 + i)n − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i), where P is the monthly SIP, i the monthly rate and n the number of months. ₹5,000 a month for 10 years at 12% comes to ₹11,61,695.

With your numbers

FV = P × [((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i)
  1. Monthly rate i = 12% ÷ 12 = 1.0000% (0.010000).
  2. Instalments n = 10 years × 12 = 120.
  3. Growth factor ((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i = 230.0387.
  4. Maturity = ₹5,000 × 230.0387 × 1.010000 = ₹11,61,695.
  5. You invest ₹6,00,000, so the estimated returns are ₹5,61,695.

Things to know

  • Returns make up 48% of the maturity value. The longer you stay invested, the bigger that share gets.
  • Stepping this SIP up by 10% every year would take it to about ₹16.87 L, 45% more.
  • At 6% inflation, ₹11.62 L in 10 years buys about what ₹6.49 L buys today.

How it is worked out

The SIP starts at the amount you enter and rises by the step-up percentage every 12 months. Each instalment compounds monthly from the day it goes in, so the result is the sum of every instalment's growth to the end date.

With your numbers

B(m) = (B(m − 1) + SIP(m)) × (1 + i)
  1. Year 1 SIP is ₹5,000 a month. It rises 10% a year, reaching ₹11,790 a month in year 10.
  2. Each month the balance grows by i = 12% ÷ 12 = 1.0000%, then the next instalment is added.
  3. Over 120 months you invest ₹9,56,245 in total.
  4. The balance at the end is ₹16,87,163, of which ₹7,30,918 is returns.
  5. A flat SIP of ₹5,000 would reach ₹11,61,695, so the step-up adds ₹5,25,468.

Key numbers

Wealth multiplier1.76xValue ÷ amount invested
Final monthly SIP₹11,790In year 10
In today’s money₹9.42 LAt 6% inflation

Things to know

  • The step-up adds ₹5,25,468 over a flat SIP, for ₹3,56,245 more invested.
  • Matching the step-up to your yearly pay rise keeps your savings rate steady as your income grows.
  • Later, larger instalments have less time to compound, so starting early matters more than the size of the step-up.

How it is worked out

A single amount compounds once a year at the return you enter. Future value = P × (1 + r)t, where r is the annual return and t the number of years.

With your numbers

FV = P × (1 + r)^t
  1. Growth in one year = 1 + 12% = 1.1200.
  2. Over 10 years: 1.1200^10 = 3.1058.
  3. Future value = ₹1,00,000 × 3.1058 = ₹3,10,585.
  4. Estimated returns = ₹3,10,585 − ₹1,00,000 = ₹2,10,585.

Total gain+210.6%On the amount invested
In today’s money₹1.73 LAt 6% inflation

Things to know

  • At 12% a year the money doubles about every 6.1 years (the rule of 72 gives 6.0).
  • All of it is invested from day one, so the full amount compounds for the whole period.
  • If markets look expensive, moving the money in over 6 to 12 months through an STP spreads out the entry.

How it is worked out

The corpus earns the annual return divided by 12 each month, and the withdrawal comes out at the end of the month. If the withdrawal is more than the corpus earns, the corpus runs down, and the result shows the month it runs out.

With your numbers

B(m) = B(m − 1) × (1 + i) − W
  1. Monthly rate i = 8% ÷ 12 = 0.6667%.
  2. In month 1 the corpus earns ₹33,333 and ₹30,000 is paid out.
  3. The corpus earns ₹3,333 more than you take out, so it keeps growing.
  4. Withdrawals add up to ₹54,00,000 over 15 years.
  5. Balance left at the end: ₹61,53,461.

Key numbers

Withdrawal rate7.2% a yearOf the starting corpus
Total withdrawn₹54 L108% of the corpus
Balance left₹61.53 LCorpus kept intact
LastsAll 15 yearsAt 8% a year

Things to know

  • At 8% the corpus earns about ₹33,333 a month to begin with. Withdrawing up to that keeps the capital intact.
  • Tax applies only to the gains in each withdrawal, not the whole amount.
  • A withdrawal rate below the return you expect leaves room for inflation and weak years.

How it is worked out

The goal's cost today is first grown by inflation to the year you need it. The monthly SIP is then the instalment that reaches that amount at the return you enter, using the same monthly compounding as the SIP calculator.

With your numbers

SIP = Cost × (1 + f)^t ÷ ([((1 + i)^n − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i))
  1. Inflation factor = (1 + 6%)^12 = 2.0122.
  2. Goal cost in 12 years = ₹25,00,000 × 2.0122 = ₹50,30,491.
  3. ₹1 a month for 144 months at 12% grows to ₹322.25.
  4. Monthly SIP = ₹50,30,491 ÷ 322.25 = ₹15,610.
  5. Or invest ₹12,91,202 once today at 12% a year.

Key numbers

Monthly SIP₹15,610For 144 months
Goal cost then₹50.3 LAt 6% inflation
Cost grows2.01xOver 12 years
Returns share55%Of the goal amount

Things to know

  • Starting a year later needs ₹18,318 a month instead of ₹15,610.
  • With a 10% yearly step-up you could start at ₹10,012 a month and still reach the goal.
  • Education and healthcare costs often rise faster than general inflation. Use a higher rate for those goals.

A 2-page report with the method and schedule.

How it is worked out

Both SIPs end on the same date. One starts today, the other after the delay, so it gets fewer instalments and less time to compound. The cost of waiting is the difference between the two final values.

With your numbers

Cost = FV(P, i, n) − FV(P, i, n − d)
  1. Start today: 240 instalments of ₹10,000 grow to ₹99,91,479.
  2. Start after 1 year: 228 instalments grow to ₹87,53,254.
  3. Cost of waiting = ₹99,91,479 − ₹87,53,254 = ₹12,38,225.
  4. You skip 12 instalments worth ₹1,20,000, and they would have grown into ₹12,38,225.

Key numbers

Cost of waiting₹12.38 LBy starting 1 year later
Corpus lost12.4%Of the start-today value
Per month of delay₹1.03 LOn average
Instalments skipped12₹1,20,000 not invested

Things to know

  • To end with the same ₹99.91 L after waiting, you would need ₹11,415 a month instead of ₹10,000.
  • The skipped ₹1,20,000 would have grown 10.3 times by the end, because the earliest instalments compound the longest.
  • Starting small today beats starting bigger later. You can step the SIP up as your income grows.

For illustration only. Results depend on the return you enter and are not a promise of future returns.

Questions

Asked often.

Is my money safe with you?

Your money goes straight from your bank account to the fund house. We never hold it. Units are held in your name and every transaction is confirmed to you by CAMS or KFintech.

How much do I need to start?

Many funds accept a SIP from Rs 500 a month. The minimum depends on the scheme, and we will tell you before you invest.

Can I stop or change my SIP?

Yes. You can pause, stop, or increase a SIP at any time. There is no penalty from us, though some schemes carry an exit load on early redemption.

Is a SIP better than a lumpsum?

Neither is better every time. A SIP spreads your entry across market levels and suits money you earn monthly. A lumpsum puts the full amount to work at once, which helps when markets rise steadily afterwards. The calculators above show both.

What do I need to open an account?

Your PAN, personal details, bank account and a nominee. It is done online in the app in a few minutes, and you only do it once.

Can I see investments I made elsewhere?

Yes. Add your outside mutual funds to the app and they show next to the ones made with us.
